Rob Yescombe 'Onion Gravy'

Hello and welcome back to another addition, this was my second session of the day, and I massively enjoyed this session.

This is the second time in two years that I have seen Rob at Confetti’s industry week, and presented a similar presentation, if not the same. Onion Gravy was the main theme of this, and at the start I really couldn’t understand how Onion Gravy could fit into games, but after he had finished that little segment it hit home when he said “Don’t show the homework, show the product”

He then proceeded to show his bad pitch when he was representing the game known as Haze, he admitted that this pitch was bad, and said he killed word of mouth. The game Haze has once again popped up in a session, just after this video, he said “Go over 3 Minutes, and you’re dead meat”

The session was really based around skills development more than it was based around Rob’s career in games, which in itself was good, we had the opportunity to develop our skills further with someone of great prestige. As I do want a position in the games industry under a writing role, this session has aided me to progress, and I personally thanked Rob at the end.

So, as the session rolled on, Rob asked us to devise a 2 minute pitch, with this premise: ‘The Hero is poisoned. He has two hours to solve his own murder before he dies’

To get to what I got below, we were given a series of questions to answer, here are the questions.
1.       Who is your hero?
2.       Why will the Audience emphasize with him?
3.       Where the hero before the story gets going?
4.       What event gets things rolling?
5.       What was the Hero’s outer motivation?
6.       What was the main conflict?
7.       What is the hero’s arc, what will he learn?
8.       What other successful stories are similar to yours?

Here’s what I got:

‘Kanunu Noa, a local nobleman and a native of Hawaii, had taken time out of his day to visit his local bar, where within the hour, an alien spaceship crashed on sight. Clearly drunk by this point, Kanunu falls over and rolls in some out of date Alien Milk that had rolled free from the smashed ship, this poisoned him and he began to vomit violently, Kanunu must now seek out the leader of the Aliens and force him to drink some of the milk, after the death of the leader, the cure is exposed and Kanunu is saved, and now knows to not drink out of date alien milk.
At the end, Rob once again said “Don’t show the protein strand, serve the steak”
Industry week just keeps getting better and better.
Thank you for reading.
